COMMANDER ALLIED AIR COMMAND

Delivering Air and Space Power for the Alliance.

The position of Commander of Allied Air Command is always assigned to a US Air Force Four-Star General who is also the Commander of United States Air Force in Europe and Commander United States Air Forces in Africa. The positions of Deputy Commander and of Chief of Staff are assigned to France and the United Kingdom and the Federal Republic of Germany and Italy, respectively, on a rotational basis.

Headquarters AIRCOM is organized in the three directorates Operations, Plans and Support. These directorates are each headed by a Deputy Chief of Staff (DCOS) at one-star level.

Allied Air Command is responsible to the Supreme Allied Commander Europe for the Air and Missile Defence of NATO Alliance member nations during peacetime operations. His command ensures the preservation of Alliance territorial integrity from Northern Norway to Southern Italy and from the Azores to Eastern Turkey, including every European NATO nation. Furthermore, in the event of a joint NATO operation he is the responsible commander of the Air Component..

Responsible for ensuring the operational readiness of assigned units, to include the update of plans and procedures, standardisation of the entire training activity, and efficiency of weapon systems, equipment and infrastructures

PRINCIPAL ADVISER to the Commander Allied Air Command

The Principal Adviser holds a staff position in an advisory role and supports the Commander Allied Air Command in all matters in his competence.

The Prinicipal Adviser does not have to be an active member of the staff, but is available on request.

Responsible to the Chief of Staff for all operational related matters, including Air Policing, Ballistic Missile Defense, Article 5 and crisis response operations. He is also responsible for ensuring Headquarters Allied Air Command is prepared to establish an Air Operations Centre if required for an emerging Contingency Operation.

Responsible to the Chief of Staff for directing, monitoring and co-ordinating operational capability development staff functions and developing and implementing policy related to operational issues. He advises the Commander, through the Chief of Staff, on policy matters regarding programming, planning and conducting of military cooperation activities, including Civil-Military Cooperation, tactical assessments and evaluations.

This program is the world’s only internationally manned and managed Undergraduate Pilot Training program and includes participants from fourteen NATO nations: Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Greece, Italy, The Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Turkey, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Responsible to the Chief of Staff for directing, monitoring and coordinating support staff functions and developing and implementing policy related to support issues. He advises the Commander, through the Chief of Staff regarding all supports issues. He undertakes operational duties supporting AIRCOM in its power projection role by supporting the activation and/or deployment of AIRCOM capabilities as well as the preparation of the HQ for its deployment requirements.
